Julia Vela Leal is a renowned Guatemalan dancer, choreographer, architect, and cultural manager known for her significant contributions to the arts in Guatemala. She began her career with the National Ballet of Guatemala and was inspired by international influences, including a formative experience in Cuban classical dance. Vela played a pivotal role in the establishment of modern dance in Guatemala, advocating for the creation of a modern dance group in the 1960s. She later founded the Folkloric Ballet of the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism, promoting the country's rich cultural heritage through dance and music. In recognition of her impact, the dance hall of the Institute was named in her honor.
