Julio A. Roca

Julio A. Roca was an Argentine military general and politician who served as the President of Argentina from 1880 to 1886 and again from 1898 to 1904. He is best known for his role in the Conquest of the Desert, a military campaign aimed at establishing Argentine dominance over the Patagonian desert and its indigenous peoples. Roca's presidency was marked by significant economic growth and modernization, but also by controversial policies that led to the displacement and marginalization of indigenous populations.
