Julio Alvarez Lopez is a Mexican national who was granted lawful permanent resident status in the United States in 2018. He gained notoriety after pleading guilty to assaulting a fellow passenger during a flight from Seattle to Las Vegas on January 24, 2024. Lopez admitted to constructing a makeshift weapon from three pens bundled with hairbands, which he used in a violent attack aimed at stabbing the victim in the eye, believing him to be part of a cartel that was following him. Witnesses described the chaotic scene and the injuries sustained by the victim, which required medical attention. Lopez's actions prompted an investigation by federal authorities, and he is scheduled to be sentenced on September 22.
