Julio César 'Pocho' Cortés was a notable figure in Central American football, known for his contributions as both a player and a coach. Born in Uruguay, he played for the Uruguayan national team in the FIFA World Cups of 1962, 1966, and 1970 before moving to Guatemala, where he became a prominent player for Club Social y Deportivo Municipal. Cortés transitioned into coaching, leading the Guatemalan national team during two separate terms and achieving notable success, including winning the Copa Uncaf in 2001. He also had a successful coaching career with local clubs such as Suchitepéquez, Juventud Retalteca, and Jalapa. Cortés passed away on July 24, 2025, in Costa Rica at the age of 84.
