Korewha

Korewha, a 27-year-old man, has been living with schizophrenia for four years and was recently in the news after fatally stabbing his mother's partner, Geoffrey Ware. He had struggled with mental health issues, being in and out of mental health wards and undergoing various treatments. At the time of the incident in May 2025, Korewha had just started a new medication regimen, raising concerns from his mother, Rita Tawhai, about his care and the potential for the tragedy to have been avoided if he had been placed in a secure facility during this transition. Following the incident, he was declared unfit to stand trial and ordered to be detained in a secure mental health facility due to the risk he poses to himself and society.
