Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) was a prominent German philosopher, mathematician, and polymath, known for developing calculus independently of Isaac Newton and for his philosophical ideas on optimism and the nature of reality. His assertion that we live in 'the best of all possible worlds' was famously satirized by Voltaire in 'Candide,' which critiques the philosophical optimism amidst the suffering and injustices of the world.
