Leo Trotsky
Leo Trotsky was a prominent Marxist revolutionary and theorist, a key figure in the Russian Revolution of 1917, and the founder of the Red Army. After losing a power struggle to Joseph Stalin, he was expelled from the Soviet Union in 1929 and spent the rest of his life in exile, advocating for permanent revolution and critiquing Stalin's policies. Trotsky sought refuge in Mexico in 1937, where he lived under the protection of artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. His time in Mexico was marked by political intrigue and personal turmoil, including a brief affair with Kahlo, before he was ultimately assassinated in 1940 by a Stalinist agent.
