Lise Cristiani
Lise Cristiani was a pioneering French cellist, celebrated as the first woman to perform as a soloist on the cello, a profession considered unconventional for women in the 19th century. She made her debut in Berlin in 1846, captivating audiences and challenging societal norms regarding gender roles in music. Despite the physical and emotional challenges of her career, including concert tours across Europe and Russia, Cristiani's contributions to classical music were significant. She tragically passed away at the young age of 28 due to cholera, but her legacy continues to inspire musicians, including contemporary cellist Sol Gabetta, who is honoring Cristiani's life and work in a new album.
