Lucy Benavidez Garwood

Lucy Benavidez Garwood, now 91 years old, recalls the harrowing morning of July 16, 1945, when the Trinity test explosion shook her home in New Mexico. As a child, she and her family believed they had experienced an earthquake, unaware of the catastrophic event that would later be revealed as the first atomic bomb test. Lucy represents the many residents affected by the fallout from this test, which has left a legacy of illness in her community.
