Luis García Meza was a Bolivian military officer and politician who served as the de facto president of Bolivia from 1971 to 1978 after leading a coup d'état. His regime was notorious for human rights abuses, including forced disappearances and violence against political opponents, as well as for its alignment with the United States during the Cold War. Following his ousting, he was convicted of numerous crimes, including drug trafficking and human rights violations, and spent years in exile before being extradited back to Bolivia in the early 2000s.
