Makhulu was the largest and oldest member of the Mapogo coalition, known for his immense size and commanding presence. With a dark mane that symbolized his strength, he naturally took the lead of the coalition, guiding his brothers through battles and territorial expansions. His reign was marked by fierce dominance, making him a legendary figure in the Sabi Sands Reserve.
