Vahtra transitioned to politics in 2003 when she became the mayor of Viljandi, focusing on beautifying the city through floral initiatives. Following her tenure as mayor, she continued to serve in local government, contributing to the leadership of Viljandi Hospital and advocating for patient representation until her passing. She was recently remembered by the Viljandi city council with a moment of silence.
