Manuel Faria de Almeida
Manuel Faria de Almeida (1934-2025) was a Portuguese filmmaker and cinema pioneer, best known for his groundbreaking yet heavily censored film 'Catembe', which offered a unique perspective on colonial life in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo). After studying film in London and training in Paris, he played a significant role in shaping Portuguese cinema, founding the Centro Português de Cinema and leading the Instituto Português de Cinema. Despite facing severe censorship that dramatically altered 'Catembe', he continued to contribute to the film industry through various short films, documentaries, and educational initiatives. Faria de Almeida's work remains influential in the history of Portuguese cinema, and he was posthumously recognized for his contributions with a Medalha de Mérito Cultural in 2023.
