Maria José Palla

Maria José Palla was a distinguished Portuguese photographer and art historian, known for her profound contributions to the understanding of Portuguese theater and Renaissance painting. Born on July 31, 1943, she completed her doctorate at the Sorbonne, focusing on the works of Gil Vicente, a pivotal figure in Portuguese theater. Palla lived in Paris during her exile, where she also studied photography and cinema under Jean Rouch. Over her career, she published numerous articles and books, and her work has been celebrated in various exhibitions, including retrospective shows that highlighted her introspective self-portraits. Palla passed away in Lisbon at the age of 81, just days before her 82nd birthday, leaving behind a legacy of artistic exploration and engagement with the themes of identity and aging.
