Mariangeles Maia, the former first lady of Rio de Janeiro, passed away at the age of 76 due to complications from a hemorrhagic stroke. A native of Santiago, Chile, she was married for 56 years to former mayor and current councilman Cesar Maia. During her husband's terms in office, she led the city's Social Works and was instrumental in establishing community kitchens, senior centers, and vocational training programs for the underprivileged. Mariangeles and Cesar met in Chile in 1969 during a leftist gathering, and their quick romance led to a marriage just 15 days later. She is survived by their twin children and eight grandchildren.
