Mary MacKillop (1842-1909) was an Australian nun and the founder of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, a religious congregation dedicated to the education of poor children. Born in Melbourne to Scottish immigrant parents, she became a pioneering figure in Catholic education in Australia, establishing the first free Catholic school in the country.
