Matija Vertovec was a significant figure in the development of viticulture in the Vipava Valley during the early 19th century. As a priest, educator, and expert writer, he taught advanced winemaking techniques to local farmers and publicly urged the renowned Slovenian poet France Prešeren to compose an ode to wine, resulting in the creation of 'Zdravljica,' which is now regarded as the national anthem of Slovenia.
