Maxim Butkevych, also known by his call sign 'Moses', is a Ukrainian human rights activist, philosopher, anarchist, journalist, and military officer. Born in Kyiv in the late 1970s, he became involved in social movements during his teenage years and has dedicated his life to advocating for human rights and supporting refugees. In March 2022, amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, he voluntarily joined the military but was captured just a few months later. After enduring 850 days of imprisonment, he was released in October 2024. Butkevych is known for his complex identity, which blends pacifism with a commitment to protecting human rights, and he continues to speak out about his experiences in captivity.
