Meriwether Lewis

Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) was an American explorer and soldier best known for his role as the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806), which was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory and find a route to the Pacific Ocean. His journey, along with William Clark, significantly expanded the United States' knowledge of the western territories and established relations with various Native American tribes.
