Miguel Woodward
Miguel Woodward was an Anglo-Chilean priest known for his activism during the tumultuous period following Augusto Pinochet's coup in 1973. Born in Valparaíso to an English father and a Chilean mother, he returned to Chile after studying in the UK to serve the community and became involved with the leftist Unidad Popular coalition under President Salvador Allende. Woodward was abducted by the navy shortly after the coup and is believed to have been tortured and murdered aboard the Esmeralda, a naval vessel repurposed as a torture center. His disappearance has become emblematic of the broader struggle for truth and justice regarding the victims of Pinochet's regime.
