Mirela Muratovic is a survivor of the Srebrenica genocide, which occurred during the Bosnian War in the 1990s. At just five years old, she lost her father, Munib, who was one of the over 8,000 Bosnian men and boys killed in the massacre. Her mother, Dzeva, also went missing during the conflict, and her remains have never been found. Mirela and her family were granted refuge in Australia in 2002, where they have since rebuilt their lives. She often reflects on her traumatic past, especially in light of current global conflicts, advocating for awareness and prevention of such atrocities.
