
Nela Martínez
Nela Martínez was a pioneering Ecuadorian politician, born in 1912, who became the first woman to serve in the Ecuadorian National Assembly in 1945. A member of the Communist Party, she played a crucial role in the 1944 popular uprising that led to the ousting of President Carlos Arroyo del Río. Throughout her political career, Martínez advocated for labor rights, education for indigenous communities, and gender equality, facing significant challenges, including resistance within her own party. She also founded the Alianza Femenina Ecuatoriana, promoting women's rights, and her legacy is honored with a plenary hall named after her in the National Assembly. Additionally, she was a writer, co-authoring works that highlighted rural life in Ecuador. She passed away in 2004 in Havana, Cuba.
