Nicolae Gârșcan

Nicolae Gârșcan was a courageous Romanian teacher from Coșuleni, a village in Northern Bessarabia, Ukraine. Throughout his life, he fiercely opposed the Soviet regime's attempts to suppress the Romanian language and identity, advocating for the recognition of Romanian as the rightful language of the Romanian community in Ukraine. Despite enduring torture and persecution, Gârșcan remained steadfast in his beliefs, becoming a symbol of resistance against Soviet oppression. His efforts were recently recognized with Ukraine's historic decision to replace the term 'Moldovan language' with 'Romanian' in legislative contexts, reflecting his lifelong struggle for truth and justice.
