He was detained in December 2021 under controversial circumstances, facing allegations of passing subscriber information to extremists, which he denied. Reports indicated he was subjected to violence during his arrest, leading to significant public concern. Although he was acquitted of charges related to data misuse, he was sentenced to four years in prison for donating to a blog that was deemed extremist after his arrest. Bredelyev served his sentence in a correctional facility and was released on June 11, 2025, having completed his term.
