Pedro Pablo Palma Lau, also known as comandante Pancho, was a significant figure in Guatemala's revolutionary movement. Born in 1952 in Quiriguá, he was deeply engaged in the political turmoil of the 1960s and 1970s, joining the Organization of the Revolutionary People in Arms (Orpa) and later becoming a founding member of the Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca (URNG). He was known for his commitment to social change and armed struggle against the oppressive military regime. Palma Lau authored important guerrilla manuals, emphasizing honor and humanitarian principles in warfare. After the signing of peace accords in the 1990s, he took on governmental roles but faced criticism for political alliances that contradicted his revolutionary ideals. He passed away in 2025, leaving behind a complex legacy of activism and political engagement.
