Philemon Sarungi

Prof Philemon Sarungi was a pioneering Tanzanian orthopaedic surgeon and politician, known as the first orthopaedic surgeon in Tanzania. He dedicated his life to medicine and public service, significantly impacting healthcare in the country by establishing the orthopaedic and trauma department at Muhimbili National Hospital and founding the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute. His remarkable courage and professionalism were exemplified when he saved a train accident victim by performing an emergency amputation. He passed away at the age of 89, leaving a legacy of excellence in medical practice and a commitment to serving his community.
