Phoebe Muga Asiyo (1932-2023) was a groundbreaking Kenyan politician, educator, and women's rights advocate. She made history as the first Kenyan woman to become a Senior Superintendent of the Kenya Prisons, where she implemented significant reforms in rehabilitation and separation of male and female inmates. Asiyo was also the first African woman to lead Maendeleo ya Wanawake and served as the Member of Parliament for Karachuonyo Constituency. Renowned for her contributions to women's rights, she was a key figure in promoting education for girls and gender equality in Kenya. In 2009, she became the first woman elder in several Kenyan communities, a significant cultural milestone.
