Pope Pius II, originally named Enea Silvio Piccolomini, served as pope from 1458 to 1464. He is notable for his humanist background and efforts to promote education and the arts during the Renaissance. Pius II is also recognized for his role in the establishment of the University of Basel in 1460, which became a significant center of learning in Europe.
