Pope Pius VI, born Giovanni Angelo Braschi in 1717, was Pope from 1775 until his death in 1799. His papacy was marked by significant political upheaval, including the rise of Napoleon and the subsequent invasion of the Papal States. Pius VI is notable for his opposition to the French Revolution and his efforts to restore papal authority amidst growing secularism.
