Pope Pius II, born Enea Silvio Piccolomini in 1405, was an Italian priest and humanist who became the 210th pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He is best known for founding the University of Basel in 1460 and for his efforts to promote a crusade against the Ottoman Empire. His papacy is often characterized by his commitment to education and scholarship, as well as his diplomatic endeavors to unite Christian states against common threats.
