René Prêtre is a renowned Swiss heart surgeon known for his extensive contributions to pediatric cardiac surgery. He gained significant recognition in 2009 when he was voted 'Swiss of the Year' by the audience of SRF. Prêtre is also the founder of the charity 'Le petit cœur', which provides life-saving surgeries to terminally ill children from impoverished families in Mozambique. He served as the head of pediatric heart surgery at the Children’s Hospital in Zurich from 2001 to 2012 before becoming the director of heart and vascular surgery at the University Hospital in Lausanne. Although he retired in 2022, he continues to operate part-time while also participating in an independent investigation into high mortality rates during his predecessor's tenure at the Zurich University Hospital.
