Richard Smart

Richard Smart, often referred to as 'The Flying Vine Doctor,' was an influential Australian grape expert and viticultural consultant who significantly impacted the wine industry worldwide. He co-authored the seminal reference book 'Sunlight into Wine' in 1991, which revolutionized vineyard management through its innovative approach to canopy management, helping grape growers enhance the quality of their produce. His expertise led him to work with clients in over 30 countries, including notable contributions to the Canadian wine industry. Smart also served as the viticultural editor for 'The Oxford Companion to Wine' across five editions. He passed away on July 2 at the age of 80 after a long battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of improved viticulture practices and better wines for consumers.
