In 1868, he commanded a military campaign to rescue British hostages taken by Tewodros, leading to the capture of the fortress at Magdala. His successful operation not only secured the release of the captives but also resulted in the eventual downfall of Tewodros II, who famously ended his own life as British troops approached. Napier's military prowess and strategic acumen earned him a reputation as one of the prominent military figures of his time.
