Roberto Danilo Samcam Ruiz

Roberto Danilo Samcam Ruiz was a retired major in the Nicaraguan Army and a prominent critic of the Nicaraguan government, who was assassinated in Costa Rica in June 2023. After being stripped of his nationality and property by the Nicaraguan authorities in 2018, he sought asylum in Costa Rica and later became a Spanish national. Known for his fierce advocacy for democracy and human rights, Samcam authored several books detailing the political situation in Nicaragua and the repression faced by its opposition. His assassination has been characterized by his family as a politically motivated crime that underscores the dangers faced by dissenters from the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.
