Roger Gnoan M’Bala was an influential Ivorian filmmaker celebrated for his significant contributions to African cinema. Born in 1941, he became a key figure in the industry, known for his impactful storytelling that highlighted social issues and cultural narratives within Africa. He was a recipient of the prestigious Etalon de Yennenga at the 13th edition of FESPACO in 1993, and his work inspired a generation of filmmakers across the continent. M’Bala passed away on July 10, 2023, at the age of 82, leaving behind a rich legacy. In 2025, a statue in his honor was unveiled at the Colonne des Etalons d’or de Yennenga in Burkina Faso, acknowledging his contributions to the arts and his role in shaping African cinema.
