Sam Louie was a Chinese immigrant and restaurateur who purchased Toronto’s Grossman’s Tavern in 1975. Under his stewardship, the venue became a beloved institution known for its live music, particularly blues and jazz, preserving its unique character for decades. Louie’s commitment to maintaining affordable prices and supporting local musicians helped foster a vibrant community in the heart of Toronto, making Grossman’s a home for many aspiring artists. He passed away on March 12, 2023, at the age of 94.
