Samson Birhane, 47, is an Eritrean man who came to the United States as a refugee at the age of 13. He lost his legal status after a conviction for robbery during his high school years but had been allowed to remain in the U.S. due to a judge's ruling that he would face torture if returned to Eritrea. Birhane has recently been in the news following reports of severe mistreatment and violence against him and other deportees at Hotel Bamy in Equatorial Guinea, where he was sent after being expelled from the U.S. under the Trump administration's immigration policies.
