Saparmyrat Nyýazow
Saparmyrat Nyýazow was the first President of Turkmenistan, serving from 1990 until his death in 2006. He was known for his authoritarian regime that enforced strict control over the country, including the prohibition of certain words and cultural practices. Nyýazow cultivated a personality cult, renaming months after his family members and implementing bizarre edicts such as banning dogs and mandating the color of cars and buildings. His leadership has been characterized by extensive human rights violations and a significant lack of freedoms, making Turkmenistan one of the most repressive countries in the world.
