Sasaki Sadako
Sasaki Sadako was a Japanese girl known for her poignant legacy as a symbol of peace and the impact of nuclear warfare. Born in 1943 in Hiroshima, she was two years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on her city during World War II. Sadako developed leukemia at the age of 12, which she believed was a consequence of the radiation exposure from the bombing. Inspired by the Japanese legend that states if one folds a thousand origami cranes, one will be granted a wish, she began folding paper cranes in hopes of recovering her health. Although she passed away in 1955, her story and the cranes she folded have become a powerful emblem of the anti-nuclear movement and the resilience of those affected by war. In recent news, origami cranes were discovered at her brother's home while sorting through a family altar, highlighting her enduring legacy and the continued significance of her story in discussions around peace and remembrance.
