Sérgio Vieira de Melo was a distinguished Brazilian diplomat and United Nations official who served as the head of the United Nations mission in Timor-Leste during its transition to independence. He was known for his commitment to humanitarian work and conflict resolution, tragically losing his life in the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad.
