Šerif O., a 65-year-old man from Zagreb, was recently in the news for being found guilty of smuggling four Turkish citizens into Croatia. His case, which took nearly four years to reach a verdict, attracted attention due to his colorful defense during the trial, where he insisted he did not feel guilty and believed he was simply helping people in need. He claimed to have picked up the individuals, whom he initially mistook for fellow Romani, out of a desire for conversation during a long drive to visit his son. Despite his explanations, the court found his story implausible and issued a fine of 2,000 euros.
