Shih Ming-teh was a prominent Taiwanese political activist and a key figure in the pro-democracy movement during the late 20th century. He is best known for his role in the Formosa Incident of 1979, a pivotal event in Taiwan's struggle for human rights and democracy. After a peaceful rally on International Human Rights Day, he was arrested and charged with rebellion. During his military trial, he famously refused to defend himself, demanding the death penalty as a means to inspire others in the fight for freedom. He was ultimately sentenced to life imprisonment but lived to see Taiwan transition to democracy and rank first in Asia in the 2023 Human Freedom Index, witnessing the realization of the ideals he once fought for.
