Sid Watkins was a pioneering neurosurgeon and the first official doctor in Formula 1, renowned for revolutionizing medical safety in motorsport. Born in Liverpool in 1928, he began his career in medicine before being recruited by Bernie Ecclestone to improve safety standards in Formula 1 after a series of fatal accidents. Watkins implemented crucial changes such as mandatory medical centers and emergency protocols that dramatically reduced the number of fatalities in the sport. He developed close relationships with drivers, notably Ayrton Senna, whom he tried to persuade to retire from racing shortly before Senna's tragic death in 1994.
