Sofka Nikolić, born in 1907 in Tabanovići near Šabac, was a celebrated singer and the first star of Yugoslav pop music. She gained fame in her early twenties after performing at the 'Bumskeler' tavern in Belgrade, quickly captivating audiences with her powerful voice. Her career skyrocketed with hits like 'Cojle Manojle' and 'Kolika je Jahorina planina,' leading to numerous performances across Europe, where she recorded an impressive 55 records in just a year and a half. Despite her immense popularity, her personal life was tumultuous, often attracting media attention, and she became a muse for many men, some of whom faced serious repercussions in their relationships due to their infatuation with her. Tragically, the death of her daughter in 1936 marked a turning point in her life, leading her to retreat to Bijeljina. She returned to Belgrade in the 1960s, but her later performances did not capture the magic of her earlier career. Sofka Nikolić passed away in a nursing home in Banja Koviljača in 1982, leaving behind a legacy that is remembered in her hometown, where a street bears her name.
