Sônia Gomes de Oliveira

Sônia Gomes de Oliveira is a Brazilian social worker and the president of the National Commission of the Laity of Brazil (CNLB). Born in 1969 in Montes Claros, she has dedicated her life to pastoral work and community service, particularly advocating for vulnerable populations. In 2023, she made history by being chosen by Pope Francis to participate in the Synod of Bishops, marking a significant moment for women's involvement in the Catholic Church. This was the first time that women and laypeople were given a voice and voting rights in such a crucial church assembly.
