
Sorin Mircea Oprescu
Sorin Mircea Oprescu is a Romanian politician who served as the mayor of Bucharest from 2008 until 2015. He gained notoriety for his involvement in a corruption scandal that led to his conviction in May 2022 for forming an organized crime group, bribery, and money laundering, resulting in a sentence of 10 years and 8 months in prison. Following his conviction, he fled Romania and was arrested in Greece in May 2022. Despite attempts at extradition, he was released on bail. Recently, he was apprehended again near the airport in Thessaloniki, Greece, as authorities worked on executing a European arrest warrant issued for him.
