Stela Rimington
Stela Rimington was the first woman to serve as the director of MI5, the United Kingdom's domestic intelligence agency, from 1992 to 1996. She was a pioneer of transparency within the agency, breaking longstanding barriers and advocating for a more open approach to intelligence work. Under her leadership, MI5 played a crucial role in combatting Irish Republican militancy. Rimington is also known for her memoir 'Open Secret' and a series of spy novels. She was awarded the title of Dame in 1996 for her services, and her influence is said to have inspired the character 'M,' portrayed by Judi Dench in the James Bond film series. She passed away surrounded by her family and pets.
