Stepan Razin

Stepan Razin (1630–1671) was a Cossack leader born in Cherkassy, who played a pivotal role in the largest peasant and Cossack uprising in pre-Peter I Russia from 1670 to 1671. During the reign of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, Razin became a symbol of resistance against the oppressive ruling class, leveraging the myth of a benevolent ruler in his communications with peasants and Cossacks. His rebellion highlighted the socio-economic struggles of the time and ultimately aimed to dismantle the power of local nobility and officials.
