Tancredo de Almeida Neves was a Brazilian politician who became the first civilian president elected after 21 years of military dictatorship in Brazil. He was elected by the Electoral College on January 15, 1985, and was set to take office on March 15, 1985. However, just hours before his inauguration, he was hospitalized due to an acute appendicitis that escalated into a severe health crisis, leading to multiple surgeries and ultimately his death on April 21, 1985. His presidency never officially commenced, with his vice president, José Sarney, assuming the role in his absence.
