Thich Quang Duc, born Lâm Văn Tuất in 1897, was a Vietnamese Buddhist monk renowned for his self-immolation on June 11, 1963, as a protest against the oppressive policies of the Ngô Đình Diệm government towards Buddhism. His act of sacrifice became a symbol of the struggle for religious freedom in Vietnam. Throughout his 46 years of monastic life, he was instrumental in establishing and restoring numerous temples, and he is venerated as 'Pháp vị Bồ tát' by the Vietnamese Buddhist community.
